GENERAL RULES FOR ALL AMSA AWARDS

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE AWARDS

  1. AMSA members are eligible for any of the awards if they have been a professional member of the Association for at least three (3) consecutive calendar years prior to the date of their nomination. Membership is not required of nominees for the Intercollegiate Meat Judging Meritorious Service Award.

  2. Officers and members of the Board of Directors of the AMSA are ineligible for all distinguished service awards given by the Association during their term of office.

  3. No member of the Distinguished Teaching Award, Distinguished Research Award, Distinguished Extension-Industry Service Award, Meat Processing Award, International Award, Achievement Award, and Intercollegiate Meat Judging Meritorious Service Award Selection Committees shall be eligible for the award judged by that committee.

  4. No member is eligible to win more than one award (Distinguished Teaching, Distinguished Research, Distinguished Extension-Industry Service, Meat Processing, R. C. Pollock, Signal Service, Special Recognition, International, Achievement, and Intercollegiate Meat Judging Meritorious Service) in one year.

  5. No previous recipient of an award is eligible to win the same award again.

  6. The nominee must be living at the time the nomination is submitted.

NOMINATIONS

  1. Any active professional or emeritus member of the Association may make an award nomination, except current AMSA officers, members of the Board of Directors, and members of the Award Selection Committees. However,
    - No member may nominate himself/herself.
    - No member may nominate more than one candidate for each award in a given year.

  2. The Executive Director of the Association must receive nominations by January 30, 2008. Nominations received subsequent to this date will not be eligible for consideration.

  3. Nominations made in one year will not be automatically carried over. The Association’s Executive Director will return each unsuccessful nomination to the nominator for updating and resubmission, if appropriate.

AWARDS NOMINATION CHECKLIST

Submit all nomination materials via the AMSA web site at www.meatscience.org/awards. If you are unable to submit the nomination electronically, please contact Debi Seymour (debis@meatscience.org) for assistance with the nomination.

Prepare the following nomination materials:

  1. A cover letter from the nominator, certifying the nominee’s eligibility for the award.
  2. A typewritten biography (1 page, single-spaced).
  3. A nomination statement: to include a discussion of nominee’s contributions and their significance to the meat industry, making specific reference to programs, projects and/or publications that relate to the eligibility description for the specific award. This discussion should be as complete as possible without exceeding two (2) double-spaced typewritten pages(four (4) pages for the Achievement Award – see award description).
  4. Endorsement letters: Neither less than two, nor more than five (5) letters may be attached for all awards (except the Achievement award, which has a maximum of three (3) letters). Letters should be from representatives of the institution/organization with which the nominee is affiliated (his/her administrators, colleagues or associates) and other persons in the field of meat science and technology or the meat industry, citing the nominee’s qualifications with regard to the specific award description.
  5. A list of publications, patents or other relevant articles of which the nominator is an author (not applicable to the Achievement or Meat Judging Meritorious Service awards).
  6. A 600 to 700-word citation appropriate for publication in the RMC proceedings (300 to 500 words for the Achievement Award).

DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH AWARD

Award: An honorarium, a suitably engraved wristwatch, and an appropriate memento.

Purpose: To recognize outstanding research in the meat industry.

Eligibility: The nominee must:

  1. Have demonstrated exceptional competency as a researcher in meat science.

  2. Be an active researcher during the year in which nominated, and have been an active researcher for not less than 5 years. This does not exclude administrators, providing they were personally involved in research during the year. Where disability is involved, nominees must have engaged in research within 36 months prior to the month of the award presentation.

  3. Be judged as a researcher on the following bases:

 


DISTINGUISHED EXTENSION-INDUSTRY SERVICE AWARD

Award: Honorarium, a suitably engraved wristwatch, and an appropriate memento.

Purpose: To recognize outstanding achievement in the field of meat science extension and/or industry service.

Eligibility: The nominee must:

  1. Have demonstrated outstanding ability as an extension-industry service specialist in some phase of the meat industry.

  2. Be an active specialist during the year in which nominated, and have been an active specialist for not less than 5 years. This does not exclude administrators, providing they were personally involved in extension-industry service work during the year. Where disability is involved, nominees must be engaged in extension-industry service activities within 36 months prior to the month of the award presentation.

  3. Be judged as a specialist on the following bases:

 


DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD

Award: An honorarium, a suitably engraved wristwatch, and an appropriate memento.

Purpose: To recognize excellence in teaching of undergraduate and graduate meat science courses.

Eligibility: The nominee must:

  1. Have demonstrated outstanding ability as a teacher of courses in meat science.

  2. Be an active teacher during the year in which nominated, and have been an active teacher for not less than 5 years. This does not exclude administrators, providing they were personally involved in classroom teaching during the year (excluding seminars). Where disability is involved, nominee must have engaged in teaching within 36 months prior to the month of the award presentation.

  3. Be judged as a teacher on the following bases:

 


MEAT PROCESSING AWARD

Award: An honorarium, a suitably engraved wristwatch and an appropriate memento.

Purpose: To recognize outstanding achievement in meat processing.

Eligibility: The nominee must:

  1. Have demonstrated outstanding ability as a researcher or specialist in meat processing.

  2. Be an active researcher or specialist during the year in which nominated, and have been an active researcher or specialist for not less than 5 years. This does not exclude administrators, providing they were personally involved in research or related activities during the year. Where disability is involved, nominees must have engaged in research within 36 months prior to the month of the award presentation.

  3. Be judged as a researcher or specialist on the following bases:

 


INTERCOLLEGIATE MEAT JUDGING MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD

Award: An appropriately engraved plaque

Purpose: To recognize outstanding contributions or service to the Intercollegiate Meat Judging Program.

Eligibility: The nominee must:

  1. Have made distinguished and meritorious contributions to the Intercollegiate Meat Judging Program.

  2. Display characteristics of loyalty, enthusiasm and dedication to the meat industry.

  3. Not be an officer of the Coaches Association in the year nominated.

Special Instructions

Nominator must be an active AMSA member, and may not be a current officer of the Coaches Association Executive Committee. Do NOT submit a separate list of publications and presentations.

 


ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Award: An engraved wristwatch and a plaque

Purpose: To recognize and foster development of young AMSA members (academic, industry, government) who have demonstrated significant skills in muscle foods research/technology that contributes to the animal products industry and the American Meat Science Association.

Eligibility: The nominee must have:

  1. demonstrated early on, innovation and aggressive leadership, which has resulted in a successful track record of accomplishments and promises greater contributions to the meat industry in years to come.

  2. been an AMSA Professional member for no more than 10 years. In the case that a nominee is enelibgible for AMSA awards due to service as an AMSA director, this restriction may be extended to account for years of service as an AMSA director.

Special Instructions

The nomination statement should include a discussion of the nominee’s early career contribution’s including their significance to the meat science. The statement should be as complete as possible without exceeding four (4) double spaced, type written pages.

This information may include such accomplishments as patents, trademarks, non-proprietary projects, number of products developed, number of students graduated, number/amounts of grants obtained, improvements in products or processes which have resulted in production efficiencies, novel process developments, development of managerial skills, and any other activities indicative of achievement in industry, academia or government.

A discussion of the Nominee’s involvement with AMSA should be included. Information on numbers of publications (peer-reviewed articles as senior author; peer reviewed articles as contributing author; book chapters; extension bulletins; trade publications; abstracts) and presentations may be included in this statement.

Do NOT submit a separate list of publications and presentations.
