I am behind a firewall, what do I do?

QuickTime uses the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) to send video and audio over the Internet. Some institutions may have a firewall that prevents movies streamed by RTSP to be viewed by clients behind the firewall. To overcome this, QuickTime can stream video and/or audio using the Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP)--the protocol used by the worldwide web. Note: Playback performance may lag when using HTTP streaming instead of RTSP. In addition, the streaming server must also support streaming over HTTP.

To configure QuickTime for use behind a firewall, open the QuickTime Settings control panel. Choose Streaming Transport from the pop-up menu. Click the Auto Configure button. If QuickTime is able to configure itself for use behind a firewall, you should be able to watch a streamed movie. Otherwise, select port 80 and quit QuickTime.

If you are still unable to view streaming movies, contact your institution's network administrator.

General troubleshooting tips for QuickTime Software on Windows-based computers: Although the following tips are related to Microsoft Windows and PC hardware/software configuration, these steps may help to resolve issues.
Troubleshooting Tips:
Make sure your computer meets the system requirements outlined at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/requirements.html.
Try running ScanDisk to verify that the directory is OK. This is an important step to take before installing any software.
Try running the stand-alone version of the QuickTime installer in "Safe Mode." It is available at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone/. This can help to isolate issues with background applications, and some driver conflicts.
Make certain you have installed the most recent drivers for your sound and video cards. Even if you have a "brand new" computer, it is not guaranteed to have the most recent software installed. Contact the manufacturer of your sound and video cards for additional information. Make certain you have installed a recent version of DirectX. This can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/directx/.

Errors are usually related to software conflicts, unusable files, or incompatibilities. They can also be related to specific hardware combinations, and sometimes the way in which the hardware is configured. Keep in mind that an error message does not necessarily point to a particular cause or solution. Since there can be many different causes for a particular symptom, some suggestions may not work, and you may need to discover a solution on your own.

Important information for users of Windows Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and 6.0 with QuickTime: Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows, versions 5.5 SP2 and 6.0 no longer support Netscape-style plug-ins, such as the plug-in installed as part of QuickTime 5.0.2 and earlier versions. Consequently, Windows customers using these versions of Explorer who visit this site may be unable to view QuickTime content in the browser. To mitigate this problem and to ensure a positive experience, you should visit http://www.apple.com/quicktime/troubleshooting/streamingcheck.html to insure you have the new ActiveX control for QuickTime.
Note: This affects only users of Internet Explorer on Windows.
Browser recommendations: Users are encouraged to use Netscape 6.1 or higher to view the archives. As of this printing there are known issues with Internet Explorer.
