Based on your experience with AMSA and your knowledge of the current state of meat science and the meat industry, what do you believe is the biggest challenge facing this association?
In my opinion, ensuring the usefulness of AMSA to its diverse membership is the biggest challenge facing the association. Of course I firmly believe that AMSA provides tremendous benefit to its members. However, in order to ensure a bright future for the association, we need to continuously evaluate our effectiveness at meeting our members’ wants and needs. We need to stay focused on our primary missions to facilitate networking, disseminate unbiased information, and educate students and each other, but we must assess our methods and continuously improve in order to increase the usefulness of AMSA. If AMSA is a highly useful association, our membership and fundraising goals will be easy to achieve.
As a potential AMSA officer what would be the most important thing for the next Board of Directors to do?
To improve the usefulness of AMSA, we must first examine the effectiveness of our two most-used endeavors -- RMC and the AMSA Website. I believe we can improve the usefulness of RMC to all attendees in a diverse audience by developing sessions that address a specific meat science issue from the basic science through the industry application. I also believe that we need to continuously evaluate our website to optimize not only content, but also attractiveness, layout, and usability.
