Oklahoma State University Wins Top Honors at Australian Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest

The 2015 Oklahoma State University Meat Judging Team recently traveled to Australia to compete in the 2015 Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest (ICMJ) held at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia.

OSU won high team honors at the 26th ICMJ beating out second place University of Sydney and the third place home team from CSU Wagga Wagga. Over 130 students from 11 Australian Universities and four international teams from the United States, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia competed for the Roy McDonald Shield sponsored by Meat and Livestock Australia.

OSU took top team prize in primal and retail identification, pork judging, beef judging and reasons/questions. The beef contest was hosted by Teys Australia in their Wagga Wagga facility while Rivalea Australia and JBS sponsored the small stock contest held on the CSU Wagga Wagga campus. Oklahoma State was the nineteenth university from the United States invited to the ICMJ contest since it began in 1990.

David Foote, CEO of Australia Country Choice and Deputy Chairman of AMPC presented the individual champion award, the AMPC Founders Buckle to Chandler Steele of OSU. Individual runner-up was Emily Jones from La Trobe University.

Other team members include Macy Perry (Prather, CA), Karisa Pfeiffer (Orlando, OK), Afton Sawyer (Paso Robles, CA), Ty Davis (Ft. Worth, TX), and Sydney Stewart (Cedar Hill, TX).

The team was coached by Morgan Neilson, Dr. Gretchen Mafi, and Wes Griffin. Morgan Neilson was awarded a plaque for coaching the high team.

In the competition, the students are required to judge beef, lamb and pork carcasses, beef and pork primals, identify an array of beef, pork and lamb retail cuts and beef primals, as well as answer questions and format reasons for several classes. In addition to the contest, ICMJ is highly regarded for its conference program, assembled by a hard working committee of 13 individuals from the Australian meat industry. Throughout the week, over a dozen industry speakers presented insight into careers in the meat and livestock industry in the areas of production, genetics, processing and technology.

The top 15 individual students were selected on day 2 of the contest and after giving a set of oral reasons to the committee, coaches and ICMJ participants, a top ten was announced at the awards banquet. The top ten were selected to engage in a five day Meat Standards Australia (MSA) training course in Brisbane later this year, where they will gain important knowledge in the Australian meat processing sector. The top ten students include Tamara Biffin, Georgia Clark, Simon Kensit, and Anna White (University of Sydney), Rebecca Clapperton (University of New England), Emily Jones (La Trobe University), Jess McGrath and Nikita Roberts (CSU Wagga Wagga), and Monica Stipinovich and Rueben Welke (Murdoch University), Five of these students will be selected to travel to the US in January 2016.
