  • October Sustaining Partner Spotlight - Smithfield Foods

    by Crystal Ahrens | Oct 06, 2021

The American Meat Science Association's authority on meat science has been anSmithfield Foods Orange and Black Good Food. Responsibly. Logo important asset to Smithfield for more than a dozen years. Its resources help the company and other meat producers stay on top of the latest industry research, trends, and best practices pertaining to meat and protein science. That is why Smithfield has remained an AMSA Sustaining Partners for the last 13 years.

In addition to functioning as a subject matter expert and educator, AMSA fosters collaboration between producers and partners that effectively advances the industry at large. The developments and advancements these collaborations generate ultimately support operational excellence within the company and beyond – helping Smithfield appropriately develop, meet, and in many cases exceed its operational and sustainability goals.

Smithfield places the utmost importance on the safety and quality of its products, which is why AMSA's expertise and research initiatives in the Food Safety & Quality space are particularly valuable to the company. In addition to its scientific research, AMSA forges networking and professional advancement opportunities that lead to valuable vendor and partner relationships in other business areas.

Smithfield Integrate, a new program that will launch in fall 2021, is a training and educational program the organizations are presenting to help expose students to the industry and challenge them to solve current industry challenges alongside existing leaders. This engaging educational conference will serve to further both Smithfield and AMSA's goals to support education and preserve and advance the future of the industry.

"AMSA's authority supports cutting-edge research on meat science and has been a tremendous resource for Smithfield over the last decade. We're thrilled that our partnership continues to evolve and are excited to partner with AMSA to further education and professional development in our industry through programs like Smithfield Integrate." Commented Doug Sutton, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, Smithfield Foods

Smithfield Foods is the largest hog producer in the United States, the world's largest pork processor, and one of the world's leading consumer-packaged protein companies. The company boasts a portfolio of high-quality iconic brands, such as Smithfield®, Eckrich®, and Nathan's Famous®, among many others.

Smithfield's reputation for food safety and quality is supported by the company's vertically integrated business model, which ensures its ability to source consistent, high-quality, and traceable raw materials. Its vertically integrated platform also uniquely positions the company to meet differentiated needs both domestically and abroad.

The size and scope of Smithfield's vertically integrated operations are accompanied by tremendous environmental and social responsibility, both of which are heightened by significant impending challenges facing the food industry. By 2050, the global population is expected to reach 10 billion people, and the global demand for protein is projected to rise dramatically. Simultaneously, the availability of finite natural resources required to produce food are becoming increasingly limited. The need for sustainable food production on a global scale is imminent.

Smithfield has taken a proactive approach to this impending challenge, pioneering sustainability standards for more than two decades through its holistic 7-pillar sustainability platform, which encompasses many industry-leading commitments such as its goals to become carbon negative in U.S. company-owned operations and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 30 percent across its entire U.S. value chain by 2030. In addition to robust programs to support the environment, employee safety and wellbeing, animal care, and food safety & quality, Smithfield believes in the power of protein to end food insecurity and has donated hundreds of millions of food servings to local communities it calls home.
